My first pack of Marvel cards was purchased from the ice cream man who drove his truck through our neighborhood every summer afternoon. With the exception of Spider-Man, the comic scene was a brand new world to me. As I opened the 1990 Marvel Universe pack and thumbed through the cards, I was enchanted by characters who could shoot "laser beams" from their eyes, pop metallic claws out of their hands, and ride fiery motorcycles. I was hooked.
When the ice cream man ran out of packs ("No mo cards! You buy ice cream!"), I jumped on my bike and rode across the street to the video store where the owner stocked basketball and Marvel cards. Of course he eventually ran out as well (I think I was the only person buying them), so I resorted to the local comic book store. By then, Marvel Masterpieces and X-Men Series 1 were available so any allowance money was readily handed over to the comic book store owner. Some kids bought candy, others bought toys. I bought Marvel cards.
Today, I still have many of those cards I collected through the years on top of new additions to my growing collection. I prefer to have my cards graded through a third party grading company, especially for rare or collectible cards as many of them are 20 or more years old. I hope this blog will showcase some of the graded Marvel cards I have owned over the years as well as Marvel cards in general.
